The Tank Museum is showing the photo exhibition “Europe’s Front” by Till Mayer from 01.08. to 30.09.2025.
Till Mayer is a multi-award-winning photojournalist and has already reported from around 30 conflict zones. But he can no longer let go of Ukraine. Fighting has been going on in the east of the country for over 10 years. In 2014, Russian troops occupied the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and invaded the Donbass. Mayer has been documenting the war as a long-term project since 2017, but since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, he has been packing up his camera and heading to Ukraine every month.
Many Ukrainians live under Russian occupation, others have fled within Ukraine and abroad or refuse to leave their homeland. Till Mayer shows highlights from their everyday lives during the war: people who fight, help, flee, wait and hope. Till Mayer shows us that Europe’s front line is not only made up of soldiers fighting with and against drones, missiles and artillery against the Russian attack. It also shows the faces and fates of the civilians who hold out in bunkers, whose homes are destroyed and who lose friends and relatives. Fates that are part of the reality of war, but which hardly get a place in our news. His photographs bring us closer to their stories and show us that the discussions about the number and type of weapons and ammunition deliveries have a direct impact on real people and their lives. Every day, for over 10 years.
