Roth-Händle cigarettes as front allotment

Inventory number: DPM 1.129

01/2017

The filterless cigarettes of the German brand Roth-Händle consisted primarily of tobacco from German cultivation. The public limited company Roth-Händle AG was “Aryanized” at the end of the 1930s.

The National Socialists were divided on tobacco consumption: While they tightened up protection for non-smokers, they saw tobacco consumption as essential to the war effort to calm the population. Goebbels therefore argued that the “tobacco issue” should be put on hold until the end of the war.

The distribution of tobacco reflected the racist and performance-oriented definition of the “national community”, according to which Wehrmacht soldiers came first. Women were only eligible between the ages of 25 and 55 and only received half the ration for men. Forced laborers were also differentiated according to nationality. Those affected by air raids also received a special tobacco ration.
