Card game “Coal theft quartet”

Inventory number: DPM 7.43

04/2017

The Coal Stealing Quartet is a card game with 34 playing cards and works in a similar way to “Black Peter”. It contains cards ranging from coal mining and processing to the use of coal. It even emphasizes the importance of coal for the war effort: one of the cards in the “Fighting Coal” theme focuses on its importance as fuel for the production of tanks.

The game was published between 1942 and 1944 and was intended to encourage the population to use fuel sparingly. At the end of 1942, the Ministry of Propaganda launched a campaign entitled “Kampf dem Kohlenklau” (Fight the coal thief), in the context of which the game probably appeared. The figure of the “coal thief” became very popular and even appeared as an image on a Marder II.
